A long, long time ago, a new Fate had just been chosen as ruler over Avalon. There could only be one Fate in the land at a time, and they held the keys to life and death, and became immortal. The only way to become a Fate was to enter the hidden realm of Avalon, and from then on they did not age from the time they were chosen. But there was a secret to their immortality; and this was that although they could not pass from old age, they could still die from physical wounds.

Rumors of the Secret of the Fates had begun to circulate among the lands during the reign of the Fate Aelyn, who decided that something must be done for her safety. So she chose for herself four strong, trusted stallions to protect her, and watch over the four corners of Avalon. They became the Four Guardians, and their descendents followed in their footsteps.

Then soon, came the birth of two twin colts, Thantos and Cadmus. They were both the sons of the Guardian of the North, and both fought against each other for the position. Thantos grew up to be a strong, powerful stallion, while the other was more the quiet sort. Their father decided it was the decision of Fate, to choose which would become the next Guardian. But Aelyn had fallen in love with Cadmus, and chose him to become the next Guardian so that she could remain close to him, and she soon became pregnant with their daughter.

Not long after, Thantos, mad with jealousy, launched a powerful war against the Aelyn and his brother. He had heard the rumor; and his brother had told him the location of the hidden realm. His desire was to become the next Fate, to enter the realm and gain immortality. He killed Aelyn, and his brother, but was then thrust into an even bloodier war with the remaining Three Guardians. After killing them, he journeyed far and wide to find the hidden realms. Once found, he entered the land, and, believing he was the new Fate, he chose his new Guardians, and lived in the realm.

Little did he know, that before he had gotten there, another had already become the next immortal. Zenith, the daughter of Aelyn and Cadmus, had already claimed her rightful place as the Fate of Avalon. And so, the ruling of the Fates had been split between them both. Zenith was still chosen Fate over Avalon, and still held the keys to bringing Life into the world, but Thantos was now able to bring Death upon those to whom he wished, and became known as the Nightwalker, killing those who stumbled in his path.

Now, although very young in appearance, the Fate Zenith has been ruling the lands for hundreds of years, keeping watch over the lands, while the Nightwalker has gathered a new rebellion along with the Guardian of the East.

Every now and then, a horse of Avalon will hear a whisper from the Nightwalker, or perhaps from the Fate, often bestowing some kind of tragedy or wonder. Follow their directions carefully and no harm may come to you.
